2009 Jul 20 01:03 (#4172.12610):"The design selection process for the D.C. Quarter caused some controversy when the District of Columbia since all of the preliminary designs submitted contained the inscription, "Taxation Without Representation." This motto refers to the fact that residents of the District of Columbia pay federal taxes but do not have full representation in Congress. The US Mint rejected the inscription on the basis that controversial inscriptions may not be included on coins. The inscription "Justice For All" is used in place of the controversial statement."
Oh, and 'In God we trust isn't controversial"?

2008 Aug 05 10:20 (#3948.11716):fivethirtyeight.com puts forward the idea that Obama may announce with national ads during the Olympics. That would be a brilliant move I think.

2008 Jul 22 04:38 (#3936.11640):It would have been nice to see the cost and expected lives saved per year on these numbers. I'm sure that the 7 trillion number is just because noone is expected to die from wood-preserving chemicals being unlisted, but how much was actually spent would be a good thing to know.
In terms of airport security the article does a good job in stressing that the 9/11 attacks have made passengers more likely to fight back, which is a security measure that costs nothing. All of the measures that have been instituted are reactionary, but future terrorists know that thing that have been tried before are met with more resistance the next time, so likelyhood of an attack along that vector is reduced. It would also be interesting to put the annoying measures (liquids/ shoe removal) in terms of productivity-hours lost.
2008 Jul 19 03:19 (#3929.11627):I just wish they didn't call him 'fusion scientist' in the headline. It gives the rest of us a bad name. We haven't had that kind of negative publicity since Doc Ocks in Spiderman 2.
2008 May 07 11:29 (#3834.11243):This would be great with a time dimension, so we could really see how things grow.
2008 May 05 01:42 (#3832.11234):They forgot some recent stuff, like "Dick in a box" and "Lazy Sunday". I know those are songs, but they included "porcupine racetrack", which is lame. I have to say I think one of the best ones in terms of lasting power and comedy/drama is #29, the argument set to Beethoven's 5th. No words, no current events- very universal.

2007 Feb 02 08:16 (#3195.9184):From the link, they seem to be including Medical Physicists in that list. I believe that might skew the results significantly, as they are in High demand and the medical profession tends to have inflated wages.

An excerpt from the holy book about the Goddess:What We Know About ERIS (not much)
The Romans left a likeness of Her for posterity--She was shown as a grotesque woman with a pale and ghastly look, Her eyes afire, Her garment ripped and torn, and as concealing a dagger in Her Bosom. Actually, most women look pale and ghastly when concealing a chilly dagger in their bosoms.
Her geneology is from the Greeks and is utterly confused. Either She was the twin of Ares and the daughter of Zeus and Hera; or She was the daughter of Nyx, goddess of night (who was either the daughter or wife of Chaos, or both), and Nyx's brother, Erebus, and whose brothers and sisters include Death, Doom, Mockery, and Friendship. And that She begat Forgetfullness, Quarrels, Lies, and a bunch of gods and goddesses like that.
One day Mal-2 consulted his Pineal Gland* and asked Eris if She really created all of those terrible things. She told him that She had always liked the Old Greeks, but that they cannot be trusted with historic matters. "They were," She added, "victims of indigestion, you know."
Suffice it to say that Eris is not hateful or malicious. But She is mischievous, and does get a little bitchy at times.

2006 May 28 09:36 (#2741.7932):Wow. Scary yet interesting. The Israel stuff is old hat, but it still makes me nervous. I'm going there in 2 weeks, partly to see it before it's all gone. The end of the letter seems heavily edited and cut short. I wonder if he had to clear it with the clerics or if that's all him.
2006 May 16 03:51 (#2713.7852):Honolulu is opposite the Kalahari desert in Botswana. Both places I'd love to go. I am willing to make the sandwich if someone donates $10000 to the Earth Sandwich fund.
2006 May 07 10:01 (#2686.7778):Please send your comments to ericHP-
There has been a push for awhile to update the website, partially by the gradreps and partially by some faculty. We wanted (and still want) the dept. to hire someone to help, but the funds are `toit like a toiger'.
Basically, many people don't view it as a priority, as some people pointed out (webpages of the dead and gone).
Eric went ahead and did the redesign himself and posted it this weekend so that people would see it annd give more comments, etc.
So don't just gripe here, explain what you'd rather see.
2006 Apr 18 11:45 (#2641.7601):8:25 hours? That's nothing! Real sports go longer: How about a 43 game-hour Cricket Match. Played over 11 days between South Africa and England in 1939, it was called a draw after 846 first innings and 1135 second innings because England had to go home.
Though they guy's wife not lettitng him in was pretty funny.
