2010 Jul 11 08:57 (#4212.12786):Did you actually have the crazy Wagyu burger they talk about? Seems like that would make a bold and very tasty re-introduction to non-vegetarianism...
2010 Jul 05 08:28 (#4211.12784):I propose that Ben does whatever he did last night over again and that he puts together an aethermix that alternates his body-bangin' tracks with tracks that are him just rambling some stream-of-consciousness into a microphone.
I would listen to it.
2010 Jul 05 08:27 (#2614.12783):YES
2010 Jul 05 08:27 (#4210.12782):I didn't get this particular one, although I do get lots of them from time to time (and some of them can be surprisingly convincing!)
2010 Jul 02 11:31 (#2614.12765):I got it too! Such memories...I actually logged in and it all rushed back: my weird familiar names based on the GI Joe PSA's, trying to log in on holidays to do weird special stuff for trophies, the works....
NanoCindy: looks like your account was deleted because you never paid for a Mr. Accessory and you had more than a year of inactivity. Sorry! I know you were dying to get back into it! At first, I thought your name was just nanocindy but now that I think about it more, I seem to remember that it had an unusual word like "stars" or "sparkles" or something in it.
2010 May 22 01:11 (#4209.12757):Dag, yo. What will be my mix's genre and theme? Heady questions.
2010 Apr 09 11:25 (#4206.12748):Further details: proper nouns would only be used in a new offshoot game called "Scrabble Trickster" which would add special action cards to the game that might allow you to use proper nouns, spell a word backwards, or steal opponent's points. So in other words, not affecting the main game of Scrabble no matter the continent on which you might be playing.
2010 Mar 29 10:28 (#4204.12738):Hey, I see what I did there! mrflip is a loser!
2010 Mar 29 03:28 (#4204.12736):For those who can't or won't look at the standings, here is the summary as of the timestamp:
-If Duke wins their next game doncarlo wins
-If Duke loses but West Virginia wins their next game, habcous wins
-If both lose the next game, mrflip winsAlso, I really feel like I deserve a commendation for being the worst of the truly awful bunch. In a year that didn't feature a beckto- or javelina-style "I'm just picking whoever, whoopee!" bracket I managed to come in dead last and that is a really special feeling. Moreover, since I either watched or kept my eye on almost every game that would have gone toward improving my score, I got to see more crushing and disappointing defeats than the average bear. This culminated in the 2-day stretch where it came down to something like me only needing (Ohio St. to lose OR Syracuse to win OR Duke to lose OR Kentucky to win) to not be in last place and every single damn one of those things naturally had to happen. Here's to you, 2010 March Madness! (Since you can't hear, I'm making a raspberry noise in time with the raising of my hand in a knuckle-first V-sign).
2010 Mar 20 09:55 (#4204.12727):Also I would love to say that Wisconsin is going to absolutely destroy mrflip's beloved Big Red, but I think we both know that isn't going to happen. The best I will give them is that they will probably sneak by playing some classic Big 10 ball (first team to 50 wins).
2010 Mar 20 08:41 (#4204.12726):How those table do turn! Suddenly mrflip and jonthegeek are flying high at the top of the (potential) standings after Kansas's stunning upset.
As the inevitable bottom dweller, I have already begun to calculate how I can claw my way into the always coveted next-to-last place position. Looks like the important matches where I differ from my neighbors are Syracuse-K State and A&M-Purdue. Go Fightin' One-of-those-teams-but-not-too-many-I-want-next-to-last.
2010 Feb 07 03:45 (#4199.12718):Apparently a "profit" does not exist.
2009 Dec 12 01:15 (#4198.12711):Bloopers from Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas. Gives new meaning to "exacting" in the middle when they do what appears to be over 200 takes of a drum rolling out of a store until they get the one exactly how they like (and Jim Henson riffs during the failures).
2009 Dec 10 12:18 (#4198.12710):Now that I investigate closer, what you really want is that twitter link because there are lots of reposts from previous years and other sites (like youtube and hulu) mixed in there.
2009 Dec 08 11:33 (#4195.12707):I still really enjoy these and this one now holds a special place in my heart.
2009 Nov 15 02:12 (#4190.12688):We are always accepting suggestions for the subtitle on the banner (or whatever you call it).
2009 Oct 29 11:01 (#4187.12679):I also question his use of only black people as a signifier of racial diversity. Clearly it is important but if you look at his Texas graph for instance it turns out San Antonio has an even lower number than Austin. Maybe I'm just missing the point but I'm pretty sure no one is going to accuse San Antonio of being too white.
2009 Sep 16 05:55 (#4184.12662):Unless mrbun knows a better connection, I can't find anything better than a Bacon number of 3 for him (through lots of people). (Using, of course, the rules that being a credited PA on a movie is enough to start the chain).
2009 Sep 16 05:49 (#4184.12661):Well look at that, soku and I have Erdos number of 7 thanks to RRK. Congratulations to us. However, I've never been in a movie so I think that rules me out of having a Bacon number.
I suspect that zieglerfe might have the best chance out of anyone since his work as an on screen extra in Powder (and Tin Cup) gives him a Bacon number of 2. However, I can't decipher his publication history so I can't determine if he has a defined E-B number.
2009 Sep 13 01:12 (#4184.12652):The rules for the combined Erdos-Bacon number are usually relaxed slightly if the wikipedia examples are to be believed. One of the scientists with a low number gets his Baconness because he was a consultant on Good Will Hunting and appeared as an extra in a scene. Mayam Bialik gets her number through a collaboration on a book chapter. Therefore, I say javelina has a defined E/B number, which is even more exciting that just finding a friend of mine with an Erdos number.
I would like to hear the real chains that connect you to both of them.
2009 Aug 28 04:33 (#4183.12637):Wow, I do like those things and was in fact entertained by that video. Well done Mr. Archive Coordinator. Is a lot of your job outreach things or mostly doing actual archiving of material?
2009 Aug 26 06:43 (#4152.12636):Tab definitely took a hit with the saccharin cancer scare. I can remember that from when I was a kid. Those guys love original Tab way too much but there's always someone out there that loves it more.
2009 Jul 24 01:16 (#4174.12614):1) Tim and Karrie are definitely behind it.
2) In the AusChron article carl linked, a lawsuit is mentioned between them and the now franchise owners. Short version: they sold the rights to Alamo to "the suits" with the right to run Ritz, Village, S. Lamar, and Lake Creek themselves going forward. They feel the suits did not do enough to "take the brand national" (although, as habcous and notthomas are fond of discussing, they are opening one as far afield as area hotbed Winchester, VA).
3) Well it sounds like the suits suck although there seems to be little hard info out there about why exactly they suck.
4) See 1).
2009 Jul 16 09:38 (#4172.12607):That's how they getcha.
I remember the first time I ever saw a state quarter: change for something I bought at the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. I didn't even know there was a state quarter program happening before that point.
I too had a large map you could press the quarters into to have a collection. I just popped the quarters out a few weeks ago and threw the map away as part of my ongoing effort to streamline my belongings. Screw you, future natedogg and natedogg's kids!
2009 Jul 14 01:26 (#4170.12600):nanocindy: I have enjoyed the nice spring and fall weather in Texas but I am really really looking forward to going back north. It's too sweaty ALL THE TIME here for me and I like wearing pants and jackets more than shorts and (shudder) sandals. (In fact I've made it through the last few summers here never wearing shorts but finally broke down this year.)
Anyway, ask me again in a few years and see we'll see if I've changed my mind.
2009 Jun 17 11:20 (#4158.12577):Ahmadinejad rally photoshopped to appear larger - sad shooping.
2009 Jun 14 02:45 (#4158.12572):This page on HuffPo seems to be "liveblogging" throughout the day with not only news updates but twitpics and youtube videos from the scene.
2009 Jun 13 01:42 (#3977.12571):More stories on the topic of "Failure" - He's just a really good storyteller.
2009 Jun 06 12:38 (#4156.12567):I haven't watched these yet (although I am very excited to get to it) but completely randomly I saw a different link today to another video essay by the same author on "following" shots in film. It was really great and it turns out that I had never thought about how much I have always loved the kineticism of this kind of shot. Shots that are not strictly "following" but have that great feeling of motion and that came to my mind immediately include the opening shot of I Am Cuba, several scenes in Jackie Brown but particularly when De Niro and Fonda have made the drop at the mall and are walking to the car in the parking lot, and the great tracking shot in Swingers of Mikey and the crew entering the club through the kitchen (which I remember having wonderful use of sound as well).
2009 May 27 11:37 (#4152.12558):I've had some Drank. It did seem to slow my roll, as they say! Actually I probably wouldn't recommend trying to drive or whatever after drinking one especially if it was on an empty stomach.
RC Mart sells it now but it is seriously overpriced.
2009 May 20 02:24 (#4130.12555):Will suing them work?
2009 May 19 04:17 (#4151.12551):Also, what do you call 35th St. at Mopac? The Crippled Cloverleaf?
2009 May 04 06:09 (#4146.12543):I enjoy these types of projects where something makes its way through the world. Reminds me slightly of that project where the person put a disposable camera in a package, shipped it, and had it (somehow) take pictures of all the people and places it met along the way.
2009 Apr 28 03:12 (#4145.12541):What I like is the GOP's offensive tactic now that amounts to "he is doing it for political expediency because his policies make him unelectable (as a Republican)". Um, duh? It's like they don't realize that it is a very unpopular time to be a Republican. Never mind the fact that he always has to fight his way through conservative contenders just to get to the primary.
2009 Apr 25 01:23 (#4082.12539):Geocities is going down and Archive Team wants to back it up. ALL OF IT.
2009 Apr 23 03:19 (#4144.12537):I heard that story on TAL and it was in their classic style: a strong narrative but with interesting lessons about the wider industry.
2009 Apr 01 05:04 (#4134.12513):There were many accounts created by spambots (a few a day) and the new user notifications were going to an email address I don't check very much so it took some time before I realized what was happening. Those accounts are now removed (and probably come up as "Secret Squirrel" if you type in the ID number because that is what it plugs in when it has no other valid information) but the ID #s were never cleared so new users still get whatever the next number would have been. We have since had to turn off new registrations completely until we decide to sit down and do something more secure (of course, when someone real actually does want to sign up we can accommodate that).
2009 Mar 31 03:57 (#4134.12491):Wow, so mrflip has changed it so you need to be logged into an account to see email addresses and it took him like 2 minutes. The force is strong with this one. You know what, this calls for an image macro:
![]()
2009 Mar 31 03:51 (#4134.12489):Also, full disclosure, when I say "I will look into it" it means I will try the few easy things that won't work and then mrflip will actually come through and fix it.
2009 Mar 31 03:40 (#4134.12487):I got at least 3 other reports of others getting the same email (word-for-word) but I did not receive one so I didn't realize. I will have to look into making the email address on the profile page private unless you are logged into an account. (I seem to have thought that was how it was operating already though a check shows it is public to people not logged in).
2009 Mar 27 01:21 (#4125.12475):I think the problem you both are having is that you are looking at mrflip's chart (which is not in any particular order) instead of the official standings.
2009 Mar 25 10:40 (#4125.12471):I propose that we are not counting doncarlo's clear throwaway upsets bracket (it was his second entry anyway) which would mean that Javelina is 2nd to last UNLESS (above thing).
I also think that Not Thomas was making a "joke" about editing brackets to help himself win and those quotation marks are entirely intentional.
Also I think just about all I need is for UConn to kick all your butts to be a big winner. So let's go UConn, shall we?
2009 Mar 23 03:38 (#4130.12468):The page was updated with responses from dealerships. Mostly: if it isn't a scam outright it is usually next to impossible to get a reimbursement from the company for a legitimate repair.
2009 Mar 22 07:58 (#4129.12465):Both the film and soundtrack album for "Svezia: Inferno E Paradiso" are worth consuming if you can find them.
2009 Mar 22 06:00 (#4130.12464):I have gotten a few of these but none in a long time *fingers crossed*. I also love the comments on his site where you choose a robot avatar as your picture (just a weird thing to have).
2009 Mar 21 03:24 (#4125.12460):I checked out the standings in the Bracket Challenge at cbssports last night and there were 4 brackets with 31/32 correct. All four had picked Wake to win.
2009 Mar 21 03:33 (#4127.12455):Welcome back my old friends: both shi and Shatner speaking in esperanto. Good times.
2009 Mar 20 11:37 (#4125.12452):BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE! Right up until all my minor upset picks don't pan out over the next two days.
2009 Mar 18 02:54 (#4125.12441):I don't know if we have Nate Silver to thank/blame but this CNN article talks about the many many statistical models on the nets trying to figure out who will win it all.
2009 Mar 18 01:44 (#4125.12440):I added Barack Obama's bracket to the mix. Unfortunately the site doesn't let you name them separately so it appears as "Natedogg (2)".
2009 Mar 17 12:22 (#4125.12436):Alright, we've got some people up in here! MORE MORE MORE.
Protip: make the account and throw a first draft bracket up now and then fix it if you feel like it later. That way you don't forget and miss out entirely.
2009 Mar 16 03:09 (#4125.12435):Oh yes, also new this year is not just streaming games to your office computer but streaming in HD! Time to upgrade that RAM!
2009 Mar 05 12:42 (#4119.12432):Oh, I almost forgot that both soku and I loved the one where Obama has the White House for his grillz.
2009 Mar 04 11:05 (#4119.12428):That unicorn one and the blue smurf Obama are really great.
2009 Feb 25 04:13 (#4115.12415):I guess Thomas Pynchon wouldn't be a bad choice if he were more famous to the average person.
2009 Feb 17 03:16 (#4110.12407):I'm pretty sure it wasn't although I can say that a group of us came across one that was left unlocked right at Dean Keeton and Speedway back during football season. It had been used to direct traffic on Saturday I guess but didn't get moved by Monday. Unfortunately SOMEbody didn't remember the default password that most of them are left at so it couldn't be changed.
On a side note, has youtube been terribly slow for anybody else for about a week? Some videos are fine but I'm getting a lot that just dribble along (like the linked one).
2009 Feb 09 02:40 (#4106.12402):The "In the Know" videos that spiral completely out of control and out of format by the end are my favorites. The king might still be Has Halloween Become Overcommercialized?
2009 Feb 04 02:10 (#4103.12392):"In those days, a 7"x7"x7" dumpster full of novelty race-car VHS rewinders was a major find."
This must be a major find because it's so hard to see a dumpster less than a cubic foot large in among all the actual sized ones.
2009 Feb 02 10:39 (#4101.12391):Relevant to these interests: Scott McCloud at TED and on TSOYA.
2009 Feb 02 10:10 (#4100.12390):Related? The Boss's crotch in cam in HIGH QUALITY.
2009 Jan 28 05:04 (#3784.12384):Well I hope they can make it work although frankly it seems like what you get if you chop everything but the music player off of a myspace page. That sounds great to me because most myspace pages are eyesores but I think at this point the myspace enrollment numbers have proven that I am in the minority with that opinion.
Now what I am interested in (from the same guy behind muxtape) is I Hardly Know Her which I will describe as Muxtape:Myspace :: IHKH:Flickr. Not that I don't enjoy the Flickr front end but I do sometimes just want a single click to give me a s**tload of pictures on a page and nothing else.
2009 Jan 27 12:51 (#4027.12380):Aw, man, I was hoping they wouldn't do this. If you haven't heard by now you aren't going to hear by June. Just pull the band-aid off already.
2009 Jan 20 02:35 (#4097.12365):
2009 Jan 20 02:08 (#4027.12361):Somewhat related: You can see Red Shoe Diaries on hulu. Also a few new weird things like direct-from-Japan game shows such as Gaki (turn on those captions!).
2009 Jan 19 02:09 (#4095.12355):I have a feeling you're really not going to enjoy this line then:
Paul Brooks wanted the trailer [for a Renée Zellweger "big city girl's cold heart warms up to small town values" movie] to be primarily comedic, but Palen felt that it needed an emotional through-line, “the stuff that tugs on the ovary.”Scrolling back through I was reminded of the exchange about the cold calculated decision on whether to include Spider-Pig (the "best joke" in The Simpsons Movie) in the trailer or to reserve it for the film. It answers why you always feel like you saw the best parts of the movie for free when you saw the trailer...
2009 Jan 16 02:30 (#4089.12347):FLAAAAAAANNNNNN also this.
2009 Jan 15 01:56 (#4089.12343):Man, now I want some soft corinthian leather.
2009 Jan 15 12:38 (#4088.12336):The ACLU's head just exploded.
2009 Jan 08 04:51 (#4036.12324):This poster really ties the room together.
2009 Jan 02 11:30 (#3938.12311):Cookie Monster Metal - this has consumed at least 180 seconds of my life (45 X 4). Also if there were a whole album of this I would probably listen to it unironically.
2008 Dec 25 01:41 (#4078.12296):That is...wow.
2008 Dec 22 08:10 (#4073.12294):I also just realized that the breaking sound on the lights is mapped to stereo so the lights to the right of the screen produce sound in your right speaker. Clever!
2008 Dec 20 12:31 (#4076.12287):I wish there had been a high frame rate camera on this show.
2008 Dec 19 06:14 (#4075.12279):Truly one of my favorite lists: Worst Band Names of 2008
2008 Dec 18 07:03 (#3747.12271):Following on that and coincidentally seen the same day: 28 Video Game Movies are in production.
2008 Dec 18 05:52 (#3747.12270):55 movie remakes currently in the works.
2008 Dec 18 05:14 (#3863.12269):Mythbusters say the bullet down the sniper scope is "plausible" after previously labeling it busted.
2008 Dec 18 01:51 (#4074.12259):zieglerfe: I have long been planning to assemble a master list of the best AE moments once I graduate. It will have to continue to wait a bit.
2008 Dec 18 12:01 (#4075.12257):AV Club Best movies of 2008 - sure the best movies are fine but the real reason to visit is each writer's individual list with categories like "Future Film that Time Forgot", "Most Overrated", and "Best Guilty Pleasure".
2008 Dec 17 12:35 (#4073.12250):I just figured out what that flash in the corner that javelina can't click on does: it makes the sounds when you mouse over and pop the light bulbs. Try it sometime in IE just to see it.
2008 Dec 16 12:25 (#4073.12247):Nah, this guy's a standup comedian. The comments on the consumerist article say so but now he's also got notes that pop on the video saying you should come see him on new years in chicago.
2008 Dec 14 05:02 (#4071.12235):Actually, speaking of trash talk, you'd be hard pressed to do better than the day Matt Hasselbeck (QB Seattle Seahawks) went to a local school and talked to the youngsters about fitness:
He took questions from students, many of whom were wearing his jersey."Do you think girls should be allowed to play in the NFL?" one girl asked.
"Girls can play in the NFL. Ben Roethlisberger plays for the Steelers, right?" Hasselbeck said, in a playful flashback to Seattle's Super Bowl loss three seasons ago.
"Joking. Totally joking. That was a joke," Hasselbeck said, chuckling.
2008 Dec 11 06:17 (#4067.12230):"SINGLE MOLECULE STUDIES OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS IN VITRO AND IN VIVO" - I think I remember that now, but I had forgotten.
2008 Dec 11 02:11 (#4068.12226):I had been using your second method but it barfs a fair amount. Will add bookmarklet and thanks.
2008 Dec 10 06:04 (#4067.12224):Also: not a global warming denier! What more could you ask than that, really.
2008 Dec 10 03:21 (#4059.12223):Hey, mrflip, they're Canadian. What do you expect, eh?
What would be pissing me off is the apparent fact that this little gambit is totally working and the coalition is getting shakier. The vote of no confidence is legitimately losing steam ("Ignatieff [likely new Liberal party head] has cautioned against automatically trying to topple the minority Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, a strategy that the party had contemplated only last week."). TPIRhorns.com/.wav, Canada!
2008 Dec 09 09:27 (#4064.12221):I had been avoiding it until I just found out the conceit: Paul and Storm's 25 Days of Newman gives you a new theme song for a classic movie in the vein of Randy Newman every day.
2008 Dec 04 04:51 (#4056.12213):Some ladies just can't appreciate a good mustache.
2008 Dec 04 12:15 (#3900.12211):I'm absolutely loving his Mario Kart prank.
2008 Dec 04 03:10 (#4059.12209):Finally, it's not our country with all the drama for once! I can't tell whether I think it is awesome or nuts to have a person with a completely ceremonial job EXCEPT those occasions when it's the most important job in the country AKA Governor General.
2008 Dec 03 04:06 (#4056.12205):Obama approves of the beard or at least he is "deeply disappointed" when you shave it.
2008 Dec 02 01:44 (#4059.12201):I learned something!
When the election happened in October I was reading about how the Liberal loss was being blamed partly on Dion and an ineffective campaign/voter turnout effort. (Also I think I read one article that I can't find now that discussed that his "English as a second language" might have turned off some segments of the voting population). Anyway, all that is to say that it takes giant brass balls to turn your political career from "I will resign as head of the Liberal party" to "Let's slap together a coalition government with me as the leader."
2008 Dec 02 01:32 (#4058.12200):Hey, I'm pretty sure that is Master Pancake Theater's John Erler in the Texas Tech one.
2008 Dec 01 01:15 (#4058.12195):"Coop! Cooper! Coop-Man! ... Dr. Pepper and a bible?"
"I told you Baylor was back! AAAAAAAAA"
2008 Dec 01 01:07 (#4058.12194):Wow, that was incredible. These are extremely well done and I could only wish that some UT people could assemble one as cutting for A&M. I also highly recommend their video for Kansas State University (motto: No Refunds) and I am anticipating watching the vids for Baylor and Iowa State.
2008 Nov 23 10:35 (#3787.12173):Today was the day to claim your free Dr. Pepper but I've tried periodically throughout the day and the servers have been continuously slammed all day. Also, Dr. Pepper owns 7/10 slots for today's most popular searches. Will they extend the promotion so everyone can get on the site? As of right now the page sort of half-loaded and a timer has reset from "3 hours remaining" to "18 hours remaining" which is either intentional or a tremendous glitch.
