Man, blast from the past. I got this e-mail the other day:

Subject: Are you there, Protolinx? It's me, Kingdom of Loathing.

Dear Protolinx,

Okay, I'm not good at this kind of thing, but I feel like I have to give it a try. So, here goes:

I was hanging out the other night, listening to some old mp3s, and I was just overcome with memories of when we used to hang out all the time. Remember? You were an intrepid, fearless adventurer, and I was the free-to-play, fun-and-funny online role-playing game that won your heart. Do you still remember those good times? I can't stop thinking about them.

I mean, I know things got kind of messed up at the end, and believe me, I'm sorry. If I could take any of that back, I totally would. And I know people grow and change, and you're not the same person you were then, but hey -- I've changed, too! I thought and thought about how to win you back. I figured I'd make you a mix CD, but I couldn't decide what "our song" was. So I just concentrated on becoming a better game for you, and here's what I came up with:

Remember how much fun you used to have with your clan? Alternately, remember how you never joined a clan because you didn't see the point? Either way, clans now have clan dungeons, group zones where your whole clan can work together. Crawl through sewers to Hobopolis, a vast underground vagrant vacation vista! Slide into the slime tube, and stir-fry sassy slimes!

I know I wasn't the prettiest game when we were together, so I had some work done. Almost every interface got an interface-lift. You can even manage most of your inventory via chat commands! I also came up with a way for you to automate some of the things you don't love about the game, so you can spend more time with the parts you do love.

Not only that, but there are way more animated .gifs than there were before. Don't worry; I haven't lost that low-fi edginess you love, but I'm a lot easier to play with now.

You can also have a custom title now, just in case you didn't feel like I appreciated what made you unique as an individual.

I should also say
Haiku Dungeon's been revamped.
See what I did there?

Maybe you quit because you got sick of always adventuring above the water. I admit that seems unlikely, but I fixed that, too -- there are a bunch of underwater zones with new food, equipment, mechanics, and challenges.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg, trust me. I'm still the silly, clever, deceptively-complex game you fell in love with, only with about 95% more awesome.

So, I'm just sayin', if you can find it in your heart to give me another chance, I won't disappoint you.

If you don't drop by, I promise I won't bother you again. I just really felt like we deserved one more try.

Love,

The Kingdom of Loathing.

Apparently this new version will only be available outside North America. 1 min NPR clarification here. The difference being that Mattel owns rights to Scrabble outside NA and Hasbro owns rights in NA. Mattel is offering new version, Hasbro is not.

I see you copied that link from the AV Club's review of the latest Mad Men episode, anchor and all. Still, it's a pretty cool site

2009 Aug 17 09:29 (#3850.12630):

John Flansburgh discusses tour riders with Ira Glass on This American Life. If you don't want to listen, he basically says that it's actually a good idea to have some crazy stuff in there you can find right away (like Van Halen asking for M&Ms with all the brown ones removed) because then you'll know if they read the important stuff like having enough power and safety procedures. Or the sobriety of the local crew.

2009 Jul 21 12:48 (#4014.12611):

This American Life now has a page that collects all their episodes relating to the economy, most or all of them done with the people from Planet Money

2009 Jul 14 05:42 (#4170.12601):

I'm with natedogg and nanocindy on this, although I've only lived in the north (Philly area) for 4 of the last 15 years. I always hear people in the north complain about the snow (my family is from MN/IA) but for all the trips I've made up north for holidays recently (to OH/PA/MN/IA) I haven't seen much snow. I like to believe that I can handle extreme cold a lot better than extreme heat. You can always add more layers, but there's only so much you can take off.

2009 May 20 10:44 (#4151.12554):

The intersection of MoPac & 360 is pretty much a diamond, but stretched apart into a teardrop shape and with an extra ramp on the left from south on MoPac to SE on 360.

The intersection of 360 and 290/71 (and Lamar) looks like the full Y but with Lamar coming in on the side.

The intersection of MoPac and 290/71 is sort of a stacked intersection.

You can always tell how old the Google maps satellite images are by the missing highways. There's a big section of MoPac missing in the image between 290/71 and south of William Cannon Dr.

2009 Apr 23 10:25 (#4144.12536):

That story was also part of an episode of This American Life. The last part of the episode is about the closing of all the Circuit City stores and is pretty good.

2009 Apr 13 09:41 (#4014.12518):

I recently came across another well put together video about the whole credit crisis thing. And there's been another This American Life episode put together by the Planet Money people about banks and how they screwed things up. Also, there was a Wired article about the guy whose equation was used to justify all these crazy financial products.

A quick survey of users 0-20, I count 6 that are inactive (posted more than a year ago) and 3 that forgot their passwords and have another account now. (Also 2 "default" accounts and 1 admin.) So that's 8 that are still active. Anyone want to check out 20-40?

2009 Mar 19 10:05 (#4125.12451):

No, my second bracket is my (Mostly) Upsets bracket. I just saw in the settings that everyone was allowed 2 brackets and made a second one for myself. Feel free to disregard as it will stay at the bottom of the heap.

2009 Feb 23 04:55 (#3863.12409):

Continuing my trend of posting This American Life stuff, a recent episode had a good intro (the first 6 min) where David Kestenbaum (who I just recently found out has a physics PhD) relates how he and his grad school friends at Harvard applied some Drake equation logic to the probability of finding girlfriends. Results? Not good. Even better was when a single female faculty member joins in and adds her conditions for finding a boyfriend/husband.

This sounds like a fun book: letters written to Obama by kids - "Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country". This was mentioned on The Inauguration Show, a recent episode of This American Life.

DTV transition delay shot down in the House. The opposition was led by Joe Barton from TX who apparently invoked bin Laden in his arguments. Has someone come up with a name for the variation on Godwin's Law for bin Laden yet?

Some preliminary info on this year's Super Bowl ads. Miller is running 1 second ads, complete with hype website. GM smartly decided not to purchase any airtime.

2009 Jan 27 12:40 (#4027.12379):

Is this delay of the DTV transition really going to help anyone? This has been in the works for years now with ad campaigns out the wazoo. There will be craziness no matter when the transition occurs. Why not just stick with the originally set date?

2009 Jan 23 05:00 (#4012.12375):

The first tentative MetroRail schedule is posted on CapMetro's blog. Not too exciting, considering there are no mid-day or late night trains combined with only 7 south/3 north in the morning and 3 south/7 north in the evening. As is pointed out by a (presumably) CapMetro employee, this track still carries freight and they only have 6 trains (for 5 running + 1 backup). They will have free WiFi (as the express buses already do) so I guess we'll just see how many people start using them.

I had the same experience as natedogg with my DTV converter. Even with one of those big outdoor/attic antennas mounted in the attic, we still had 2-3 fuzzy stations. With the converter they are all completely clear. The CreateTV is nice sometimes as it has lots of cooking shows and occasionally runs old 80s episodes of the Joy of Painting.

Really? I've sort of come to expect a certain level of quality from AE posts by mrflip. From this guy's intro page:

Thanks to the convenience of the internet, many of the headlines from the Tonight Show are only a click away at the NBC website. Below are some of my favorite headlines from recent months. Although there is not an explicit copyright disclaimer at the bottom of the NBC web-page (at least that I have seen), I feel compelled to mention that the content on this page comes from the Tonight Show web-page at nbc.com. I am in no way affiliated with Jay Leno, his wry sense of humor, or his awkwardly large chin.

Still, funny stuff. Also, he has 14 pages of it for your convenience.

  • MetroRail was originally supposed to open this fall, but was delayed by construction issues with the Kramer and Howard stops (the two closest to us, incidentally). We drove by the Kramer one today and there was barely anything there.
  • The fares for everything (including the previously free Dillos) goes up next weekend. See the new fare schedule here that includes the new MetroRail fares.
  • Speaking of fares, the Bus Riders Union of Austin proposes to cancel fares since they apparently make up only 3% of CapMetro's yearly budget. Discuss.

A few things:

  • My yearbook pictures looked a lot like the 1996 photo, so apparently I was 2 years behind in fashion. No surprises there.
  • The 1976 photo looks remarkably like Phil's hair does now (he's been avoiding Bird's lately).
  • They also don't list the Eden Prairie Center on the list of malls. Another missed opportunity.

    2008 Aug 12 10:05 (#3961.11752):

Reading about the pictograms reminded me of a previous Olympics that had neat icons - the '94 winter Olympics. I wasn't able to find a complete set, but just found this one photo. They are based on Scandinavian petroglyphs. I thought they were pretty cool, but I might be slightly biased.

There's a collection of icons from previous summer Olympics here

    2008 Aug 12 06:30 (#3961.11751):

Those "squiggly-line sport icons" are not just on NBC's page. They are the official sport icons from the Beijing Organizing Committee:

The Beijing Organizing Committee have released pictograms of the 35 Olympic disciplines. This set of sport icons is named the beauty of seal characters, due to each pictogram's likeness to Chinese seal script.

And yes, they are pretty cool.

This is probably old news for any Journey fans out there, but Hijinks Ensue pointed out to me today that Journey has a new lead singer. Be sure to check out the video since, as Joel from HE points out, this new guy sounds more like Steve Perry than Steve Perry. The best part of the Wired article is the rabid Steve Perry fan objecting to calling Steve Perry obsolete.

Also, Boston hires a Home Depot employee to be their lead singer.

Also also, if you wear chain mail while jamming, this guy wants you to be in his band

I was not able to make it switch directions by focusing on anything. When I looked at it again after about 30 min of other browsing it was turning the original way again (clockwise). I convinced myself that it was some trick of the animated image, but someone in the comments said the file only had 34 frames or something, so it's not like it's on a timer. One of the headlines under science and technology is Speed of Light Made Faster. It reminds me of the explanation of Futurama writers as to how space ships can move so fast in their show. They are still moving below the speed of light, it's just that the speed of light was increased at some point.

This reporting of the story is a little more science based (even has an APL link). Maybe someone could make things a little more clear for those who may be, uh, a little rusty on their E&M. I seem to recall something about group velocities not being able to move faster than c.

Maybe I should just stick with my car.

      Some excerpts:

Scarborough also determined that Volvos were the most ''Democratic'' cars, by 44 to 32 percent, followed by Subarus and Hyundais. But although a lot of old Volvos on the road are driven by Democrats, the customers in Volvo showrooms no longer fit the old stereotype, according to a survey of 163,000 new-car buyers last year that was conducted by CNW Marketing Research of Bandon, Ore.

All surveys found that nothing is more Republican than a big pickup. ''The No. 1 vehicle bought by millionaires is the Ford F-Series pickup truck,'' Mr. Spinella said. ''They're farmers, ranchers, contractors, independent businesspeople. They basically work for themselves and they have substantial assets.''

The survey also found that minivans skewed blue, just as Chely Wright surmised in her song. At first glance, this might seem odd, because Republican car buyers tended to have more children -- 3.5 on average, versus 1.7 for the Democratic buyers.... Because the Democratic women get more of a say in the decision, their families end up with more minivans than S.U.V.'s.

"By clearing forest so that a pattern would be visible to landing aircraft, a landowner outside Austin, Texas (see also aerial photo in Lisheron 2000), created a target that is also useful for evaluating spatial resolution of astronaut photographs. The forest was selectively cleared in order to spell the landowner's name 'LUECKE' with the remaining trees (figure 10). According to local surveyors who planned the clearing, the plan was to create letters that were 3100 ´ 1700 ft (944.9 ´ 518.2 m)."

This is not something that some people want to hear (I won't name names) but is a relief or at least a hope for other (again, I won't name names). From his page on carbon:
"Diamond, because it has historically been kept expensive by the DeBeers cartel, has not found many uses outside of jewelry. Small manufactured diamonds are used as abrasives, but even they are a bit expensive. In the summer of 2003, however, we witnessed what is very probably the beginning of the age of cheap, large synthetic diamonds, with two companies, Apollo Diamonds and Gemesis entering the gem market with manufactured white and yellow diamonds respectively. Since diamonds are in fact dirt common even in natural form, and since they are really not very pretty as gemstones go, their value may well utterly collapse over the the next decade or two. The idea that they are valuable is, after all, a pure invention on the part of DeBeers, and as such it's unlikely to survive changing conditions."

It also makes fun of people who can't answer correctly and can't spell when they add new people or questions and makes fun of itself when the questions aren't really questions

I have actually seen Grace Under Fire. According to TVTome.com, it was on for 5 seasons. However, shows like Get A Life or The Critic that were only on for 2 seasons it guesses with no problems.

Train of thought of a internet junkie:
      1. See Ali G hosting above flash cartoon.
      2. Look up Ali G on IMDB.
      3. Look at bio.
      4. See that Sacha Baron Cohen gave Class Day commencement speech at Harvard this year. As Ali G.
      5. Remember that Conan O'Brien gave class day speech some years ago and look for list of past speakers.
      6. Find Conan's speech

This reminds me of this contest Penny Arcade ran during their expo in August. They had a group of 128 people (I think) in a single elimination competition. Each round was a competition on any game on any console (not chosen by the competitors, of course) and the final round was an original Pong setup. For pictures of the winner's new stash, see here. Not quite the vast number of consoles of the auction mentioned above, but HUGE numbers of games.

I knew I had heard of Wil Wheaton when his name came up last night. But not because of his role in Stand By Me. Oh, no. I had heard of him because he was on Star Trek and the artist who draws one of my favorite web comics wrote about him when he went to a Star Trek Convention in Tulsa.
His website looks pretty cool, though.

      2004 Sep 30 11:32 (#745.1781):

Oh, also (and this came from a question from natedogg at the show), I thought everyone should know that they named their production company Rooster-Teeth so that they could call their company Cock-Bite with out using the word "cock".

      2004 Sep 30 11:29 (#745.1780):

Oh, wait... I knew I'd find it. Apparently they're only doing Strangerhood every two weeks. And according to the Red vs Blue site (see link above) they've already written most of the new season.

      2004 Sep 30 11:26 (#745.1779):

I'm wondering if they're going to devote less time to Red vs Blue so they can do two shows at once. When we went to see them at the Alamo last weekend, they said they spend something like 40 to 60 hours a week making one episode of Red vs Blue and sometimes up to 90 hours. That doesn't exactly leave a lot of time for new things.

I think there's also a song about apples by the Barenaked Ladies which could segue into any number of songs, I'm sure.

According to the Death Clock, I will live to be just a month short of 99 years old. So much for males dying young. Although by that time, the average life span may have increased.

You should totally pass this on the the new gradmisc e-mail list.

So at the voting statistics page I saw that in 2000, Alaska and Montana somehow had more than 100% of the voting age population being registered.

Hey, the Lamborghini is a whole 28.5% off and at a two day minimum that brings the total to only $3998 (plus tax and idiot insurance).

So before I actually realized who TheClaw was and how the nickname might have come about, it reminded me of two episodes (1, 2) of one of my faviorite web comics. It has a long running plotline which I find amusing.

The blink tag must not work on my home computer with Windows and IE. I've heard this from Laura and her computer, too. Thank god for that. (It does work on Mozilla in the grad lab, though.)

This was actually posted in last week's What's New? column. The paper is pretty entertaining.

The 9 minute audio of the game is great.

He was in Berk's QM class with Laura and me our first semester here. He would follow Berk up to his office every day to ask him questions. Also, after seeing him in class three times a week, it was pretty obvious that he only wore the same four Hawaiian shirts all the time.

      2004 Aug 19 03:33 (#568.1292):

Yeah, I think we established at some point that you were entering Laura's birthday correctly into your PDA, but forgot to write the 0 for Feb 20.

Hmmm... they picked me as a Food and Wine Connoiseur:

"You know which wines go best with which foods, and you can make New York City's finest sommalier feel like a kid at a keg party. You wanna take that Emeril guy and beat him with a stick, but really - you've got more class than that. What people love: You know the best restaurants and what their specialties are. What people hate: Every waiter in town wants to mangle your pretentious ass."

While I do like to eat and drink, I think they left out the most important elitist for this particular message board: the Technology and Electronics Aficionado.

I was thinking that this Tom DeSanto guy has come a long way from Logan's Run to X-men 1 and 2 and this new Transformers movie when his IMDB entry informed me that he is working on a remake of Logan's Run. Maybe they'll be interested in using the Fort Worth Water Gardens again. (Fish, sea-greens...)

I believe it's actually Turkish Wizard of Oz, not Star Wars. L and C might not make it to Wizard of Oz, but I'm all about Red vs. Blue and some disc golf.

I had no idea that the Astros played in Minute Maid Stadium. I knew many sporting arenas had been selling out to various corporate sponsors, but I had never really bothered to look up all the names. For one thing, I think it's pretty lame that the Ballpark in Arlington is now Ameriquest Field.

Actually, Nate, SC just lifted the ban on tattooing last week.

If you notice on the complete listings page it says that one ticket can be good for a double feature, so if they are showing two movies in one night you can go to one and then just stay for the second. If you schedule it right you can see 20 movies for $41.

      2004 May 24 01:35 (#293.617):

Now we just need to figure out how to access all the other cameras in the various locations on campus if solely for the purpose of checking to see if the media rooms in RLM are avialable for ExMFC.

I like how the article points out that "Donald Trump characteristically has all the angles covered, giving $2,000 to both President Bush and Mr. Kerry." Might as well be fair.

Again, for those who don't follow the links or who try the link after the new issue is up:
Bathroom Too Disgusting To Shit In
AUSTIN, TXThe men's bathroom at area rock club Emo's was declared too repulsive for the emptying of concertgoer Max Risdy's bowels Saturday night. "The floor was covered with water, there was toilet paper and garbage everywhere, and it smelled disgusting," Risdy said, wincing at the memory Monday. "It was really not the kind of place you want to leave a big pile of digested food matter after squeezing it through your rectum from the depths of your bowels." Risdy added that the area near the music venue's stage was too loud and crowded.

In case this link stops working at some point, or for those who don't really follow the links until after reading comments, here's the story:
      The Google Terrorist
It was the lead item on the government's daily threat matrix one day last April. Don Emilio Fulci described by an FBI tipster as a reclusive but evil millionaire, had formed a terrorist group that was planning chemical attacks against London and Washington, D.C. That day even FBI director Robert Mueller was briefed on the Fulci matter. But as the day went on without incident, a White House staffer had a brainstorm: He Googled Fulci. His findings: Fulci is the crime boss in the popular video game Headhunter. "Stand down," came the order from embarrassed national security types.

Actually, this was done by the same people who did Red vs. Blue. They have it on their site here: http://www.redvsblue.com/appleswitch.shtml
If you don't know about Red vs. Blue, it's pretty interesting stuff, too. Apprently they made a DVD of most of the episodes. I'm not sure where you can get said DVD, but I'm sure there will be info on the site.

I knew there was a reason I needed a bigger tower for my computer! Damn.
Or you can just disconnect the fan in your computer and let the heat from the electronics cook things on a little aluminum foil inside your case.

Ooops. Damn my occasional cut and pasting incompetence!

Check out some of the other things in this guy's main directory. Apparently he was involved in making a fuel cell powered gokart. Also, he has some pictures that seem to be of a deer that got hit by a small prop plane as it was landing somewhere in Canada. It's in the directory deer, but be warned - the pictures are a little gruesome.

Alright. It doesn't take much prodding for me to tell things. I remember sneaking into a movie when I was in middle school. It was an R rated movie so we bought tickets to a PG or something. Not exactly getting in for free or getting a two-for.
Yes, my senior year of college we saw two movies for one a total of two times. The first time we paid to see Showtime and snuck into 40 Days and 40 Nights, two very mediocre movies indeed. I think for 40 Days they should have just junked the sound track and dialog and put in some 70s porn music or something equally ridiculous.
The second time I paid to see Spiderman and snuck into The Scorpion King primarily because some of my friends were fans of wrestling/The Rock and all the ridiculousness involved. Best scene - the swords that caught on fire and continued to burn through a 10 minute fight scene.
