Anthony Bourdain watched Beirut die (req. free salon pass). He finds out first-hand that now was not the time to film a segment showing how the food and nightlife had rebounded since Lebanon's bloody civil war. A bizarre and sad tale of a city that can't seem to stop being decimated (and of the highs and lows of rapid evacuation from a foreign land).

"Back to the Future: The Enchantment Under the Sea Dance Revisited" - Wonder what it would be like to have Parts I and II of "Back to the Future" synched up on a split-screen during which both Marty McFlys are ... all together? (Disclaimer: Time gaps are due to logical off-screen action).

I searched AE for this game (after I came up on it from here). Seems classic enough that it would get some mention - anyone familiar?

I have a thing for maps, especially public transportation maps -- but others too. So I thought these were neat.
There's a lot of other cool stuff on this site as well, like a link to find any ship, anywhere.

A funny thing happened to reid, mrbun, habcous and me on the way back from Dallas this weekend. mrbun was driving his newly-detailed Honda down I35E, minding his own business. Keep in mind that this was before the infamous "Two Peg" incident(*), so he wasn't feeling smug, but angry about how much Dallas sucks.... [more inside]
Every Jeopardy question ever -- a work in progress.
We were talking a little bit last night about the microclimate in the bay area and yesterday's heat wave was a perfect example. It was 87 degrees in San Francisco yesterday while just about 30-40 miles away in Livermore across the bay it was a balmy 115 degrees out. Crazy...

I just spent a week with cable/satellite access, which of course may not be novel for you but is always exciting for me. Except, not so much this time. Sure, I got to watch the Daily Show and Colbert live for the first time in a long time. And I got to see a few eps of MXC which, frankly, I'm ashamed to admit that I found highly amusing. (Plus, they show tons of The Three Stooges which is still totally awesome. When did I become the primary audience for Spike TV? Man, that disappoints me.)
Anyway, so much of cable was just crap. Maybe I was just watching the wrong things. Do we have the equivalent of a show that investigates how much fish hungry cats will carry away? I would watch that every week.

Saw this dude riding down S. 1st street on a scooter with a sidecar today with one girl behind him and one in the sidecar. Had no clue that a scooter could handle it or that they're actually mass producing these things. The one I saw looks like the picture in the extended description. [more inside]

So, you heard
that that Italy won the World Cup trophy. What you might not have heard about was the insane drama that played out in the final minutes of the match. With minutes to go in the final overtime, and a near-inevitable penalty shootout looming, France's best player, Zinedane Zidane, decided that the insults he recieved from Italy's Marco Materazzi were far too much to take, and responded in the only logical way, a headbutt. As mrflip remarked at the time, "those soccer guys sure know how not to use their hands." Anyway, Zidane headbutts, gets ejected from the game for directly an intentionally assaulting another player, and France loses.

Questionable Content is a web-based comic that traces the lives of twentysomething music dorks as they live out their lives in a semi-futuristic Boston. I read all 600+ strips this weekend--be sure to start at the beginning, because the whole thing is one story arc.
Didn't think you were dorky enough? Then, come and invest in the Spock market--buy shares of Kirk, sell shares of the Red Shirt guys who always die, and make a fortune in federation credits.

I was watching Conan tonight, and he made a reference to Mr. Gropinator himself doing Japanese commercials. I thought, YouTube has to help me here. And yes, for your viewing pleasure, here are several of these gems.
this one is my personal favorite.
Booey, booey, Arnold.
Booey, booey, indeed.
Oh, and he's also polling below 50%, and looks vulnerable to the right opponent. May I suggest using one of these as a campaign commercial?
