Pranks in the battle between Science and Sociology of Science. Maybe you have heard of the Sokal Affair in which a physicist with a chip on his shoulder submitted an article to a Sociology of Science Journal that was rife with errors and bad/psuedo science. Guess what? naively, they published it. But do you know of the Bogdanoff Affair? In this, these brothers managed to get articles published in peer reviewed physics journals that might have been all bunk. Was it revenge from the "Soft Scientists"? [more inside]

I was reading the wikipedia article about "red states and blue states" and I stopped in to the talk page to find out what the dispute was all about. It let me in on a very important piece of information:
The blue states weren't always blue. In fact, it changes every four years so no one party gets "the better color." Was anyone's memory good enough to remember back to a time when the Dems were red? I mean, red is usually the color of Left/Liberal/Labo(u)r parties, isn't it?
Ken Jennings is playing again! So next monday the three day tournament starts. I have a TiVo and I was wondering what you all want to do about viewing this most fabulous set of games. I have stuff to do Wednesday night, but we could save it and watch on Thursday. Any suggestions?

Cover Songs that are taken to be Originals (part 2, part 3). Thanks to a preview at the Alamo, I learned that Bananarama's Venus is a cover of one-hit-wonder Shocking Blue's tune (which, with Stars on 45's cover, makes it the only song to ever chart 3 times). This site catalogues more such songs... though it's missing two favorites, "Tainted Love" by Gloria Jones and "The Tide is High" by The Paragons. [more inside]

Summer is either the most disappointing or singularly greatest season for movies depending on the type of flick you like to see. I think that the headlines at Fametracker and The Onion AV Club spell out their feelings pretty clearly. But all is not lost thanks to your friendly local Alamo Drafthouse which is having the greatest non-local film festival ever conceived. Beginning in North Texas and traveling for 6000 miles over 21 days, the West Coast Tour covers everything that makes the Alamo great: movies in their original shooting locations (Devil's Tower! LA! SF! Utah!), guest stars (Goonies! Peter Bogdanovich!), a chance to win a classic car ('64 Malibu from Repo Man!), and more hot desert driving than you can shake a stick at.

MIT students jumping out of a building. I wonder if they did the mechanics calculations?
A friend of mine from college is into civil engineering and architechture (read: he likes skyscrapers). His dad was a civil engineer and gets a magazine called Civil Engineering (available online through UT). The April issue had a few articles about Texas including one about highway 130 which is being built to bypass Austin. Every once in a while I'll try to find as many versions of some song as possible -- like Ring of Fire (Cash, Blondie, Dylan, Dick Dale, Skatalites, Social D, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra) or Impossible Dream (Sammy Davis Jr, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Elvis, Luther Vandross, Ray Conniff, Original Cast). It's interesting to see how each artist puts their signature on a well-known tune. But what would you say to 32 versions of "Ghost Riders in the Sky" or 100 versions of "Besame Mucho" or 250 versions of "House of the Rising Sun"?

Speaking of smoking, the god damn mexico/central american fires are burning again which means the smoke's gonna return to austin. This shit happens every year and combined with the heat/humidity it makes summer super shitty. At least it's not all summer. Ughhh...

Say you like MD 20/20 like I do, but you're in prison. You're not going to get a hold of that sweet burning taste ("a taste of purgatory", as I call it) while you're in the clink. You're going to want to brew up some Pruno. It's definitely as offensive as Boone's Farm but can be made illicitly under the warden's watchful eye. You'll be needing some rotting fruit, some sugar, and ketchup packets....
