Here's a cool lecture by Mythbuster Adam Savage about following your obsessions. (20min talk followed by Q&A about his talk and various Mythbusters questions)
I have found through his interactions with the internets that Adam Savage is a surprisingly smart guy. He is really super bright and knows exactly what he doesn't know but respects the people who do and has the curiosity to want to know more. He's been a welcome participant at metafilter now and then and used that board for show suggestions! (and then put MeFi in the background of the show.)

Wow. Thanks Nate. Not only did I enjoy the talk, but I thought the Q&A afterward was super entertaining. It amazed me how well thought out and clear his responses and reasoning were.
