Myers's position (which is mirrored by Richard Dawkins) falls mostly at the far end of the "cooperate with religious leaders to come to an understanding" vs. "religion should not be given deference in any form." As the years pass my heart hardens and I find myself agreeing more and more with their ideas and tactics. I know mrflip is very unhappy with that approach because it doesn't win a lot of hearts and minds and appears tremendously elitist. For my part, I am happy to have some firebrands in the world pushing the issue so that the rest of us seem less extreme.
It is just a piece of paper (or cracker), right? That holocaust Torah scroll is an historical document and may be an "original" and so worth preserving but I'm not going to be sad if any old piece of the bible is used to wipe with.
It's an open effort to intentionally piss people off. There is no point being made. It's just being an asshole. He responded to the far right extreme of the Catholic movement with a response designed to piss off all Catholics. It's completely moronic to amalgamate the two groups.
Not that the death threats and crap are at all justified. Obviously the people who overreacted to his overreaction are even more fucked up.

You would be surprised at how many people will anonymously threaten your life if you announce that you will be dumping a styrofoam cracker in the trash with your coffee grounds (and a few pages of the Quran and The God Delusion, for good measure).
