Pulitzer Photos (and more) - the photo Pulitzers came out recently, with two extraordinary photos taking first and second. That spurred a fascinating rundown over at the washpost chat house of recent past winners and what the pulitzer committee looks for. [so you don't have to wade through, photos embedded after jump.]
Jason Kottke links to this extraordinary slideshow of photos taken from RFK's Funeral train, narrated by the photographer.
Meanwhile, Bruce Scheier runs down the War on Photography -- this Guide to Photographer's Rights is well worth browsing through. Forbidding photography in a public place is almost *never* legitimate, and seizing film in the absence of an arrest or a court order is never permitted.
The winner:

The runner-up:

(and a second later:)

"a lone Jewish woman defying Israeli security forces as they remove illegal settlers in the West Bank":

The well-know Elian photo (fascinating run-down of the backstory at just about the halfway point -- ctrl-f for "immersion":

Along with the Israeli settler, my own favorite, a girl being rescued from floodwaters:

(see also this Girodet painting.)
Firefighter and two-year-old girl form the Oklahoma City terrorist bombing (see also this similarly heart-breaking one):

Tank man (which did *not* win a Pulitzer):

On the subject of sweet photographs, boston.com has launched a new blog called The Big Picture which picks a news topic and showcases a few beautiful full size pictures. This page focusing on the Olympics has some great pics of a no-legged runner, pandas, and a completely sweet RC Car that will be used to return javelins to the start point so no humans have to be in harm's way.
That no-legged runner was the subject of a Wired article last year. There was some question about whether he was eligible to compete in the Olympics because some claimed his carbon fiber running legs gave him an unfair advantage. Apparently that's been cleared up and he gets to compete.
It's an amazing story, and I for one can't WAIT for 5,000 vaseline-lensed retrospectives about his career and childhood during the olympics broadcasts to rob it of any poignance or inspiration.
Don't worry, flip, he's not American, so they'll hold down the retrospectives--no interesting athletes play for other countries [and consequently, the only relevant track events are sprints]
I'm still taking the 'over'.
Stabilized Video Collages -- entrancing.
Bummer -- "[world-class sprinter and double amputee] Oscar Pistorius will not compete in the Olympic Games next month."

I don't know whether these are tweaked for printing or what -- but the photos off the pulitzer.org's site all look really 'crispy' (overly-contrast-adjusted) to me. Maybe sG can weigh in.
