Eff Emm You has a writeup on a really cool electronic music gadget named Tenori-On. It encompasses lots and lots of sounds in a neat little touchscreen package that looks like a Lite Brite. The Youtube videos on the page really sold me on its potential.
If you can move past the Media Lab foofaraw, there's some pretty awesome stuff in this TED talk by Tod Machover -- I especially liked the Hyperscore and Music Visualization stuff.
Some of you may be familiar with this commercial ofshoot developed by a pair of graduates from Machover's group.

Two reactions:
1) The type of music played, along with the visual style of the insturment totally reminded me of something I would have seen on 3-2-1 contact or Reading Rainbow when I was six
2) I've been wondering why people haven't been coming up with clever ways of using modern digital technology to invent new musical instruments in ways that aren't just glorified synthesizers/keytars. It's neat that they've come up with an interface that is beginning to do just that.
