Be creative in moving a ball around. At the annual Game Developers Conference, it appears the buzz wasn't about the game-world's equivalent to the summer block buster, Gears of War II, instead everyone was a chatter about a neat little game that allows you to draw in objects to try and help you move a ball to a star shape.
I thought it was pretty cool. Check out the demo thats embedded in the news item linked above.
The only other game pre-view that I saw which also made me go, "oooooo cool! I might check that out when it's released" was the preview of Spore back in 2006 which is supposed to release later this year I believe. Sorry Jerry it's being produced by a big name developer unlike the above Crayon Physics Deluxe game but i thought the Spore concept was pretty cool.
Technically one could argue that it's just a fancied up civ building game, but it's definitely a lot larger in scope as you're guiding the evolution of a species starting with it as a small multi-celled organism.
I just did a google search to look at the demo video again to refresh my memory and even found a vid of Robin Willliams playing around with the Spore interface in front of an audience at some convention or another. Pretty funny stuff.
We were actually talking about this last night at bowling dinner. Awesome. I shall enjoy it vicariously through the rest of you.
It brought to mind the old video where some folks had used a physics simulator to make a giant "When Frictionless Planes Attack" montage -- but since no one remembered, including the guy who originally posted it, I give you SomethingAwful Physics... and jkottke's curated colxn of LineRider videos as lagniappe.

This article gets tot he heart of most of what annoys me about modern videogames. I could give a fuck about a game that is virtually indistinguishable from Castle Wolfenstein, but with photorealistic boxes and wall art. Give me something like Portal, which makes me think, or something like this game, which is different and creative. Or at least, something that I haven't done before, รก la the Wii, and Guitar Hero.
