Duncan Watts doesn't believe in the theory of The Tipping Point. He thinks there is no such thing as a class of Influentials that are tastemakers that decide what ideas or products catch fire. He thinks anybody can start a trend. Consider it an assignment or personal challenge.
The funniest part of the whole thing was how the music industry most aggressively rejected the argument--hipsters clearly dictate the popularity of music, because I remember how the most popular music of the 80s was composed by Jeff Buckley, the Smiths, and the Clash.
And just think the effect that they came to have in the 90s, as Elliot Smith soared to superstardom while less hipster-friendly artists like Britney Spears and Matchbox Twenty lived in relative obscurity.
