Isn't it strange that the supposedly überleftist Times neglects to mention, anywhere in this article anything regarding what must be a huge gap between rich and poor in a country where the average person makes $12,000 a year?
“You see, in Moscow, everyone can feel himself a millionaire,” Mr. Karryev said.
Indeed. And I do realize that coverage of poverty here is hardly better, but this article struck me as particularly strange--EVERYONE'S A MILLIONAIRE!!
The "loans for shares" scheme and the rise of the "oligarchs" -- one of many reasons I file Clinton in the bottom half of 20th c. Presidents.
Yes. During all of the endless lamenting following the death of Milton Friedman, someone should have pointed out the massive damage that his U of Chicago school of economics did to the former Eastern bloc.
Ranking the 20th c. presidents would be fun.

That is a strange thing not to mention, but I think the guy's quote is out of context...he was talking about how passersby can feel like millionaires because they could roll around in his counterfeit bill display booth.
I do have no doubt, however, that Russia is the next big playground for the super rich. If Anthony Bourdain's Travel Channel show is to be believed, Moscow is rapidly becoming a more expensive city than any in Europe.
