The Google Lunar X prize. $25 million to the first private capital team to put an autonomous rover on the moon and drive around a bit. This is the start of a new space race, for sure.
Yes, and the computing power of the Apollo lander is less than that in a Furby. The point is to do it cheap, not new.

The Apollo mission cost $25.4 billion in 1969 dollars. That's an awesome project but the economics may be off.
