Compulsive clickers unite! The helpful comment from Mr Flip may have been sufficient coverage of this issue, but after reading the above linked blog post, and the associated comments, I'm a little curious about what y'all's article reading habits are.
In the comments of my posted article I see an amusing mix of people like me who hate double-click popups to the depths of our souls, and people who think we're crazy for that.
"I've got an idea: how about you just stop double-clicking? Freaks."
Impossible!
Here are the two adblock additions I use to end this insanity on my computer:
*.nytimes.com/js/common/screen/altClickToSearch.js
http://site.answers.com/main/js/*
Adblock started to fail me, so I found this greasemonkey script.

I don't click or highlight paragraphs too often when I read but I definitely have developed a "click-to-focus" habit to allow me to scroll with the wheel which has turned into a multiple-click-to-make-sure-it-heard-me habit. This is irritating on sites such as this otherwise well-organized weather portal which count on tricking your popup blocker by only executing the popup after you have clicked anywhere on the screen.
(I just tried it again and it looks like firefox now catches the popup but it didn't use to).
