What 5 Comedy Movies would you take with you to a desert island?. David Cross picks Rent and Homer and Eddie.
Also, good ol' Ze was "a standout neuroscience student at Brown (who) opted out of a Ph.D. in favor of his band, which fell apart in 1999. He eventually went to work in advertising."
That is the best first paragraph of an NYT article I think I've ever seen.
Also: 'Rent' and 'Gates of Heaven' are inspired choices for 'Essential Comedies of all-time'.
After thinking about it today, and until somebody suggests something that must be on the list but isn't, my list is:
Office Space
The Naked Gun
Swingers
The Big Lebowski
Clerks
Here's a list of 500 more if you want to get started.
- Some Like it Hot
- OC & Stiggs
Ferris Bueller's Day OffDr. Strangelove- The Big Lebowski
Top Secret!The Producers
Also: looking at the AFI list it took me until like the fifth row to figure out why they thought "10" was the greatest comedy of all-time.
Shaun of the Dead
Swimming With Sharks
Clerks
Office Space
In The Company of Men

Another weird pick is zefrank's own choice of the 12 minute short film "The Perfect Human" by Jørgen Leth. This film served as the basis of Lars Von Trier's The Five Obstructions. Von Trier challenges Leth to recreate that film in 5 new and radically different ways. I guess you would consider it "funny" if you were, say, Dieter from Sprockets.
