BBS Archaeology - back in my day, we didn't have the fancy series of tubes known as the internets. We had modems! And we didn't have blogs, we had bulletin boards! And we called them BBS's, according to the style of the day! Well, there's still a few around, so if you have an old modem you can wardial for cheap using vonage or skype!
My first paycheck went to buying a 14400 baud modem (unfortunately not HST) that was, nonetheless, six times as fast as anyone else's I knew. I helped get our school BBS wired to FIDONET, which seemed huge til I got net access the next summer...
Oh, man. I used to play Trade Wars back when I was in middle school ('93-'94) on a 286 that had become my computer when my parents upgraded to a Compaq 486. Good times.

I got either a 14.4k or 28.8k modem with my birthday money in the early 90's (before, but not long before, 56k modems became the cheap cheap norm). That thing plus my dad's abandoned Amiga 500 kicked down some sweet MUD doors.
