The Falkirk Wheel - Applying 21st century engineering to an 18th century problem.
I wonder what the mathematical description of the wheel's shape is. For instance, in mechanical design we're taught that a gear tooth is the involute of a circle: this shape ensures that the rotational speed remains constant. The wheel's interior edge appears shallower than an inscribed circle, but continous; I wonder if it has a nice, similarly constrained shape.
