What do you do with an enormous collection of old-timey 78 RPM records? Rip them all to RealAudio and setup a website called Honking Duck, of course!
For that super-old-timey in you. Get yer washboard on.
RealAudio sucks. I have no idea why the Honking Duck guy would use Real. H. Duck sez: "Each tune started on a 'well loved' 78, then went through 2 generations of cassette tape, then MiniDisc, AIFF, and RealAudio." I sympathize, but I have an MP3 player, not a RealAudio player. Does anyone have a RealAudio player?
Also, if you browse the site, he claims full copyright over "compilation web site, all the text, ID3 tags, filenames, and other information". This seems rather contradictory to me. Hhhmmm... I'll post all this music that I have from N'th generation dupe, whose copyright has lapsed, but I'll sue your ass into the ground if you use my ID3 tags, bee_honk_yaatch!
But that's really besides the point, isn't it? I still think the site is really cool, and if I listen to a few more tracks I may be tempted to send Mr. Duck a couple dollars.
Sudden thought: I could wget all the RealAudio, then just batch convert to MP3. Whaddaya think?
you could use Sound Forge to filter out the needle noise. i don't know what is the best .ra to .mp3 conversion tool. I tried Imtoo but it appears these .ra files are copy protected...
Of course they're copy protected! He doesn't want you bastards ripping off his ripped off work.
Also, I forsee a future for HyperLemur as a repository for such things as lost Pat Robertson campaign tapes and complete copies of Dancing for Mental Health.
I don't actually have a copy of Dancing for Mental Health. You'll have to speak to Shi directly for that.
Hhhmm.. so the .ra files are copy protected, eh? Mr. H. Duck seems a lot like someone that, if I met them in person, I would not want to speak with them. Project: locate RealAudio DRM cracking software.
yo, javelina, I have to retract that statement about the uncrakability of the .rm files. Do a search for rawavrecorder.zip. Only catch is you have to record in real time.
Looks like I need some help with a wget command line. I've tried the following:
wget -w 5 --random-wait -o honkingducklog -t 20 -r --convert-links --recursive --level=7 -e robots=off http://www.honkingduck.com/
But they've set up the HonkingDuck download pages in a way that appears to reject tools like wget. Could the experts among us make a suggestion, please?
Looks like I've got a redundant recursive there, but that didn't stop wget from wgatting (!=wgat) at least some of the pages and directory structure.
You need to set up wget to use --loadcookies and a spoofed referer tag. In other news I know that the StreamboxVCR folks have cracked the real streaming protocol; I don't know if this will help you dump the files. Can't you just use winamp to bulk dump them to wav's which you then reencode? I think you can.
Ok, I'll try --loadcookies and come up with some sort of referer page address. the ideas was first to get all of the necessary files onto my computer, then to figure out what to do with them...
How to convert any audio file to WAV using WinAmp. From your friends in the band Busted Hearts.
