I guess while I'm shamelessly promoting myself (oops), I should let you all know that the photos on that page are a year or two old. I was a little overweight then, but I've picked up running. Here's a more recent pic. I'm at the bottom of the page. Let me know if you want to race me sometime! I'm best in the middle distance.

What's your GGR?

Null set? Mine never shows up in the suggestion window. :(

without the "common name" step:
Nathan Harrison: 370,000
Nate Harrison: 353,000

With the "common name" step:
Nathan Harrison: 370,000 (thank you undergraduate research lab)
Nate Harrison: 117,666.66 (AE barely makes it on the third page)

But hey, it could be worse. You might have the same name (or god forbid, phone number) as a certain self-promoting H-Town underground rap star (see if you can guess the name from this clip! Or perhaps you prefer it chopped and skrewed?) It gets stuck in your head

I'm confused about my GGR. "Ned Flagg" actually gets suggested after 4 letters, but since "ned" means "with" in danish, the results are a lot of pages about the flag of Denmark. Also, there are only 10 suggested pages when it finally gets the name right. :-( So I guess my GGR is only 2.5 ... BUT, if you ignore all the danish-language pages, my real self is in the second entry, that's kinda nice. It's the WingTsun website. "Ned Flagg" also has to compete with "Ned Flanders" up to the first "g"... D'oh!

"Edward Flagg" fares a bit better, still requiring 4 letters, but getting 127 results. GGR = 31.75, yay! Again, though, my real self is the second entry (Shih lab webpage), and the 9th result says I'm still working on my undergraduate thesis! They haven't updated that page in over four years! That prof doesn't even work there anymore.

So we know I'm not popular. Nate is approximately 3700 times more popular than me. Good thing I have healthy self-esteem! Anyone else have a definable, but very low GGR?

There must be some kind of mojo that causes a difference between the number of results given in google suggest and the number of results google claims to have when you do a full search.

Even looking at english filtered results for ned, you get his name on the first page of a reported 45,500 english pages. That seems pretty good to me, so why does Google Suggest say there are "10 results"?

Natedogg, that's because Google know which Ned you're thinking of and only counts the pages referring to him. But, Google shows you all the rest too, so that you feel like you've contributed to the process somehow. Google already knows what your next search will be. But, it let's you type it so that you don't start talking about it like you do Microsoft, or Big Brother.

Matt Lane has a GGR of 1,125,000. Second listing. Now that's a SICKLY (sic) tromping of Mr. Flagg. SICK. How true...

Me sad :-(

Don't be sad. It's really out of our hands. GGR is a product of the naming conventions of our times.

The baby Name Generator has a really cool java applet that follows names through the generations based on birth certificates. It plots the occurances over the decades.

The GGR probably has more to do naming probabilty over the past three decades, than with popularity. Except in my case, of course, because I'm very very popular. ;^)
