Speaking of tiny hamburgers, which we now are, I can't believe I have been forgetting to take a picture of the newest "slider"-servin' hamburger joint in town: Reid-O's. You read that right: someone opened up a hamburger place with the most scrumptiously ironic name ever (if you know our beloved reid's culinary proclivities). At night the G/M Steakhouse across from Book People turns into Reid-O's whose totally awesome assed A-frame sign outside promises "Sliders | Coneys | Chili Dogs | $1.25". I pass it daily on the way to work: a picture of the sign will be forthcoming here now that it will get more exposure than me just emailing it to Reid (funny, but previously not funny enough to merit the effort).

Also, before someone springs the "Harrison and Kumar go to White Castle" joke again, let me just say: Been to Chicago, Done That

Oh my god! where'd you get that picture of bunny?!?!

This Reido's joint sounds tailor made for aforementioned fellow, right down to the ding-dang dessert. we'll have to visit. luckily it is across the street from (catty-corner) whole foods, so i can eat, too.

radtastic!

Don't forget about Krystal's, the White Castle of the South. There is not one in Austin yet (there are plans to build one around the Round Rock area).

I heard of Krystal's through Julie. She loves them so much she can't get enough of them. I swear there is a cult following with these burgers. Here is my first (and last) Krystal's experience:

******

Summary of a conversation with Julie

Julie: Do you want to go to Krystal's and have some burgers with me?
Fernando: Sure. Did you say burgers?
Julie:Yeah. I am so excited. I haven't been to Krystal's in two weeks and I was afraid I wouldn't find anybody to go with me. *screching noise*

***

Fernando: Which way?
Julie: Just take I-35 North.
Fernando: Alright.

***

Fernando: How far is it?
Julie: Not too much longer, it is only in Killeen.
Fernando: Okay.
Fernando: How far is Killeen?

******

Needless to say, we took a fucking car trip just for burgers. The people in front of us and behind us were from Austin and made a special trip just to eat Krystal's, just like we had done. I ate three. Julie ate six. And Julie bought two dozens more to take home with her.

I just remembered that when I told Julie (weeks later) that I was moving to Houston one of the first things that she said that she hated me because there was a Krystal's in Houston.

Dude, I don't know about some of the marketing going on over at Krystal's...

That must be new. The last time I went they only sold sliders.

I just ate some sliders and a coney dog from the aforementioned Reid-O's.
Things to like about Reid-O's:

  • They use Vienna Beef and/or Hebrew National dogs exclusively (guess it depends on the day)
  • Today, there was one politely chatty tattooed indie girl running the place with her cat-eyes and short spiky hair.
  • G/M Steakhouse is the Guiness record holder for Longest Distance Throwback. The atmosphere must be seen to be believed but for example they have stools at a breakfast counter...awesome.
  • They serve something called Texinatti chili which was pretty damn fine.
  • Get the cheese on your sliders: it's better that way.

Potential downsides to Reid-O's:

  • There is nothing approaching vegetarian in this place. I'd bet they manage to get some meat into the "Grilled With" which is just donut and ice cream.
  • Only open from 6pm to late, which is no good for lunch on the weekends

In conclusion, it was awesome and I will go again.
